There’s a massive downpour in the Midwest right now, so I’ve been spending my days working inside and…watching movies on Netflix, of course! Here are some of my top picks to get you through these next few rainy days.
This indie film starring Gillian Roberts and real-life life partners Leighton Meester and Adam Brody is the perfect pick for a rainy day indoors. The film, directed by Susanna Fogel, is about two best friends, straight-laced and straight Paige and wild-card and lesbian Sasha (Roberts and Meester), who are dealing with their romantic lives very differently. When Paige starts dating Tim (Brody), their close relationship becomes strained. Roberts, Meester and Brody all give brilliant performances, and there’s a bonus performance This film is a wonderful commentary on friendship, relationships, and how growing up doesn’t necessarily mean growing apart.
Another indie flick for another rainy day. This 2000 movie starring John Cusack combines music, heartbreak and romance to make a wonderfully entertaining feature. Cusack’s man-child character, Rob, reflects on all his past failed relationships when his longtime girlfriend, Laura, leaves him. Combined with a solid soundtrack and some wonderful performances by Joan Cusack, Jack Black, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Tim Robbins, this film is definitely going to turn your rainy day into a fun one.
Mona Lisa Smile
Since I just finished watching this, I had to add it to the list! Julia Roberts plays Katherine Watson, a “subversive” art history professor who comes to teach at the all-woman, ultra-conservative Wellesley College in 1953. This films makes me cry every time I watch it. It’s chock full of feminist messages–think, vintage ads for appliances and girdles and the firing of a school nurse for giving students birth control!–and some great clothes and hair from the 50’s. If you want to feel some feelings, this is the rainy day flick for you.
